Quarry Inspection Results In Early White Christmas For Paul!

If you see any summer ‘snowmen’ at HBPW don’t panic, it’s just that we have been working at Melton Ross chalk quarry where white is certainly the in colour of the season!

Chartered structural engineer and Associate, Paul Jacklin, made several visits to the North Lincolnshire site to carry out an inspection of all Singleton Birch’s high level walkways, access platforms and ladders.

Said Paul: “Chalk is used in the steel and chemicals industries and, in its own right, is fairly harmless, however, it does hold moisture and, over time, it is this moisture that can cause steel to corrode and, ultimately, deteriorate.”

The inspection was carried out under the guidelines of the government’s Factory, Stairways, Ladders and Handrails guidance document.

“My role was to look out for any deterioration in the condition of steel within relevant areas, and help our client to develop a maintenance strategy. Personally, I have a lot of experience of such inspections, however, in a chalk quarry, best advice must always be ‘don’t wear black!’”
