HBPW has solid experience of a broad range of civil engineering disciplines and, as a leading provider of such consultancy, we have completed an extensive range of projects, some of which are outlined below:

Heavy Civil Engineering

HBPW has designed significant heavy civil engineering commissions since the company was established. These include:

  • Slip formed reinforced concrete bunker at Guardian Glass which dominates the skyline in North East Lincolnshire adjacent to Junction 36 of the M62
  • Reinforced concrete basement for a school assembly hall at Queen Ethelburgas College, Thorpe Underwood, York
  • Sheet piling design for widening cuttings at Milton Keynes Railway Station

Infrastructure Design

HBPW provides expertise in the design and detailing of infrastructure works and in the procedures to obtain:

  • Section 38 Approvals
  • Section 30 Agreement (Environment Agency)
  • Section 104 Agreement
  • Section 278 Agreement

HBPW also has the software in place for the design of drainage schemes to achieve 1:100 year drainage attenuation.

Foundation/Substructure Design

At HBPW we have an established reputation for value engineering and the economical design of foundations for both building and civil engineering structures.

Examples of this include:

  • Queen Ethelburgas College
  • Jack Lunn – Viewcroft Apartments (piling eliminated)
  • East Midlands Signal Control Centre (piling eliminated)
  • Glasgow Signal Control Centre (piling eliminated)
  • Didcot Signal Control Centre (piling eliminated)

In order to achieve the greatest economy of design, HBPW have developed in-house expertise in the interpretation of geo-technical reports, preferring to commission our own ground investigations. This ensures that the information derived addresses all the parameters required for successful integrated foundation and associated temporary works design.

Marine

The engineers at HBPW are proficient in marine design. Examples of marine works undertaken by HBPW include:

  • 2 No Humber Pontoons at Immingham. Design of pontoons and permanent mooring facility in the Humber Estuary for ocean going tugs.
  • RO-RO Jetty – Henderson Quay at Immingham. Design and detailing of jetty to support roll trailers and fork lift trucks.
  • Director, Paul Withers was responsible for the design of berthing dolphin BD5 the biggest in Europe and Eastern Bullnose structures at ABP Hull.
  • Fire Dolphin in Humber Estuary

Temporary Works

HBPW works closely with contractors to design the temporary works associated with heavy civil engineering works. Examples include:

  • Reinstate Temporary Works – Cathedral Green Footbridge, Derby
  • Falsework for concrete construction – Wilton
  • 25m x 30m x 6m deep cofferdam for basement construction including bespoke struts and waling.
  • 12m deep cofferdam with 800mm tubular struts for constructing Ennerdale Link Road cut and cover tunnel
  • Assessment of temporary bank stability Milton Keynes Railway Station
  • Design and Certification of Working platforms for tracked Plant – BRE Report 470
