Coal imports at Immingham Dock on the East Coast are now running more smoothly thanks to the endeavours of HBPW.
Associated British Ports decided to reinstate and extend an existing railway line which had been out of commission for several years.
The branch line, which runs from a coal processing area to the dock’s main rail line, passes over a coal hopper
“Because it had not been used for some time,” said HBPW Associate Paul Jacklin, “we were asked to assess the steel structure supporting the line.
“We were told that it needed to be capable of supporting a Class A 66 locomotive. Following inspection we advised that the cross beams needed to be replaced due to deterioration, however, the main beams were proved to be satisfactory,” he added.
The line has now been extended, re-opened and is operating successfully, facilitating the speedy transportation of coal from the docks to onward destinations.
