Keeping UK Freight On The Move

HBPW is playing a key part in keeping freight moving at one of the world’s busiest container ports.

DP World London Gateway is a state-of-the-art, highly automated deep-sea container port on the same site as one of Europe’s biggest logistics parks and close to the UK’s largest consumer market.

HBPW has been working with Buckingham Contracting to design four truck parks and an access road, with concrete hard standings, within the parameters of the logistics park.

Managing Partner, Paul Withers, said: “DP World is a huge site located on the north bank of the River Thames in Thurrock, Essex, approximately 30 miles east of central London.

“It not only has unrivalled deep-water access, road and rail links to the whole of the UK, but is also capable of handling the world’s biggest container ships.

“However, whilst the ground conditions in the area where we were required to develop the truck parks were challenging, DP World had undertaken a long-term ground surcharging exercise to modulate, and moderate, total and long-term settlements in advance of BGCL taking over the site. This provided us with concise material parameters for the design of the hard-standing areas, which was extremely beneficial.”

Construction of the huge facility began in February 2010, and is expected to take several years, with the port and logistics park being completed in stages. The first phase of the port, which opened for business on 6 November 2013, was the construction of a £400 million dredging and reclamation programme, led by a joint venture between contractors Laing O’Rourke and Dredging International.

“This incredible combination of deep-sea port and logistics park offers a port-centric solution with unrivalled facilities, tri-modal connectivity, unmatched safety, speed and reliability,” added Paul. “We are proud to be associated with this amazing feat of engineering.”

Founded in 2005 through the merger of Dubai Ports Authority and Dubai Ports International, DP World has a portfolio of 77 operating marine and inland terminals supported by over 50 related businesses in 40 countries across six continents.
