Disabled commuters and young mothers with prams using Luton Railway Station,, could soon be reaping the benefits of HBPW’s work.
As part of the station’s regeneration project we are currently looking at feasibility options for providing stair free access to all platforms, which is currently not possible.
Associate and chartered structural engineer, Paul Jacklin, said: “Many of Britain’s railways were built in the Victorian era, so to bring them up to modern standards is a huge job when you are talking in ‘country’ terms.
“Luton is one of the stations that still has certain challenges, and our role is to provide guidance on how best to achieve universal disabled and pram access. Ultimately we hope to design the lift shafts, footbridge and associated staircase to link all platforms to the main station buildings.
“Over the coming weeks and months we will be investigating the existing station buildings to assess their stability so that we can ‘break’ into them and provide a new structure that will support the client goals.”
