HBPW Part of £400m Doncaster Scheme

Water is part of everyday life for anyone living in Britain – usually courtesy of the inclement weather – however, it also has major implications for our bridge engineers, even when we are as far inland as South Yorkshire!

That’s where our team have been working on a railway ‘over bridge’ at Rakes Lane, Doncaster as part of the £400m Rossington Inland Port scheme.

The bridge crosses a section of the South Yorkshire Joint railway line and creates the new access for construction traffic required as part of development work on the port scheme. HBPW devised a proposal to build a new bridge within an existing bridge, removing the need for costly railway possessions.

Contractors will use it to remove material from one side of the development area to the other. Currently the railway severs the site in half.

The major scheme, which is creating new jobs in South Yorkshire, was made possible after Helios Europe, the European specialist logistics developer, struck an agreement on funding and development with Shepherd Developments and Segro, the property company.

Developers plan to build up to 5.75m sq ft of rail linked distribution warehousing plus an intermodal container facility, that will provide retailers and third-party logistics providers with buildings that have both direct motorway access and direct rail to port container services.

The Rossington site will be deemed an “inland port”, having customs clearance and bonded warehouses on site. HBPW is working on behalf of the Buckingham Group.
