HBPW and Graham Construction are hoping for another gong tonight as one of the country’s premier civil engineering projects is entered into the ICE North West Awards.

Liverpool’s Gladstone Docks Biomass Project has been put forward for recognition in the ‘Large Project’ category of the Institution of Civil Engineers’ prestigious awards which will be announced live this evening at Blackpool’s Hilton Hotel.

HBPW worked alongside Graham’s to complete the civil engineering design on the £100m biomass facility which features three huge silos capable of handling up to three million tonnes of wood pellets a year, and which support Drax Power Station’s decarbonisation programme in North Yorkshire.

Managing Partner, Paul Withers, said: “This was a mammoth project and I am delighted that Graham’s have decided to enter it into the ICE Awards. Whether we are successful or not, there is no doubt that this is one of the key civil engineering projects delivered anywhere in the UK during 2016.”

Gladstone’s three huge silos each measure 40 metres by 50 metres high and are capable of holding a combined total of 100,000 tonnes of wood pellets. They now provide the Selby-based power station with a new, sustainable low carbon fuel source.

All of the wood pellets are also transported by rail, ensuring there is no impact on the road network.

The new terminal, which has created an additional 47 permanent jobs at the Port of Liverpool, has been built as part of Peel Ports’ ambitious growth plans for the Port of Liverpool, with the company already investing £300m to create the UK’s most centrally located deep water container terminal, known as Liverpool2.
