Case study: Tuffnells

Background:-
HBPW was asked to help one of the largest independently owned British parcel delivery companies in the UK, Tuffnells Parcels Express, to meet increasing demand with the engineering design of a new extension.

Demand had been particularly high at the Haydock depot, located on Merseyside, a centre of some considerable activity and surrounded by several motorway networks. More capacity was needed.
Challenge
Tuffnells was established almost a century ago and specialises in next day business to business delivery across the UK. But demand for its services had been so high in the North that a new 500m2 extension was required at its distribution centre at Haydock in St Helens.

However, the ground in the area was considered to be ‘made ground’ which meant it could, theoretically, have been made up of any range of unsuitable materials and potentially unable to support the weight of the building. Engineers had to be sure it was capable of taking the new structure’s weight.
Solution
HBPW commissioned its own ground investigations. The in-house geotechnical team eventually gave the all clear, enabling work to progress on the development of an extension to the existing warehouse featuring automated dock levellers, which enable vehicles of differing sizes to quickly load and be on their way, hard standing areas and comprehensive drainage.
Outcome
Capacity at Haydock has now massively improved thanks to the new facilities.
