Case study: Elstow Coating Plant

Background:-
HBPW Consulting was appointed by Lafarge to undertake the detailed design of foundations of a new coating plant at the former quarry at Elstow in Bedfordshire.

Challenge
Ground conditions at the Elstow site were challenging, with approximately six metres depth of made ground and ‘high walls’ over the former quarry faces, which created hard spots and may have led to unacceptable differential settlement of foundations supporting mechanical plant.

Solution
HBPW designed and detailed reinforced concrete foundations to support the load specified by Beninghoven, the equipment supplier, and coordinated the complicated setting out requirements specified.

Outcome
The plant has now been in operation for a number of years and the foundations have performed satisfactorily.
