HBPWs newest engineer, Thomas Flint, has got a chance meeting nearly 10 years ago to thank for his latest career progression.

Thomas, who joins the company from Atkins, attended a presentation dinner at the Rotary Club of Retford in 2008 when he was just 18, to receive a monetary gift from the club’s Percy Laws Memorial Fund. Cash awards are given to students who have made an outstanding contribution at both school and within their community.

“HBPW’s Managing Partner, Paul Withers, was sitting on the same table,” he said, “and when he heard that I was about to study civil engineering at the University of Nottingham, he told me to get in touch once I’d graduated.”

Ten years on Thomas took Mr Withers at his word, albeit belatedly, and now joins the company as a Chartered Civil Engineer!

“It’s been a slightly convoluted route back to Retford and HBPW,” he said, “but I have finally arrived after work experience at Severn Trent Water and North Midland Construction during my university years, followed by five years with Atkins as an Assistant Civil Engineer and later, a Chartered Civil Engineer. I am really looking forward to the new challenges ahead.”

Thomas, who achieved a 1st Class MEng (Hons) from Nottingham University in 2012, went on to build up a raft of experience, including work on the North West Rail Electrification Programme and, at one point, was seconded to the Humber Bridge Board for seven months.
