Ben Daly left everyone speechless when a secret taste challenge among staff declared him the unexpected winner of HBPW’s very own bake-off challenge!
It was all part of a ‘coffee morning’ fund-raiser by Macmillan Cancer Support and members of staff were each invited to bake a cake and bring it into the office. Every slice went on sale for £2 with all proceeds going to the cancer charity and £130 was raised.
Organiser, Helen Haynes, said: “It was a nationwide event and we decided to get the whole office involved, challenging people in two categories, Best Tasting Cake and Best Looking Cake. There were some wonderful creations but everyone kept commenting on the exquisite taste of the After Eight Mint creation.
“It was only later that our ‘blind’ baker stepped forward as Ben Daly, one of the ‘top room’ engineers. A female member of the team was heard to whisper: ‘Well I never, you don’t expect a bloke to bake that well!
“We have all been trying to find out whether it was Ben or his mum that actually baked the cake! For now we are giving our engineer the benefit of the doubt!”
Elin Griffiths from geoenvironmental won the best looking category with her Smarties cake!
Reports that Michelle Stubbs from accounts had to give up her charitable endeavours after three slices of cake have been grossly exaggerated. “I paid £10,” she said, “but in the end I couldn’t stay the course. There is only so much icing fondant that a woman can manage!”
