Plain Sailing At Hayle Habour

Hayle HarbourThe regeneration of historic Hayle Harbour in Cornwall has been completed and HBPW can rest easy knowing its engineers have worked hard to overcome a range of challenges.

ING and Cornwall County Council started an ambitious project to refurbish the harbour area and provide infrastructure for its development by other partners.

But, a few months ago, it wasn’t such plain sailing as engineers were called on to think with ‘historic’ heads as they liaised closely with English Heritage.

“Modern construction is very rigid and far less flexible than older methods of building,” said HBPW’s Paul Withers. “Consequently when you try to marry the two you are always going to meet problems and Hayle Harbour was no exception.

“All said, it has been a successful project and it’s great to know that we have played our part in such a great engineering scheme.”

The port was a significant site in the Second World War as a centre for munitions manufacture and fishing. However, has it been in decline for many years, with the port areas largely derelict with many collapsed sections of mass masonry quay walls.

Working on behalf of Carillion, HBPW Consulting Ltd, has designed major construction elements, including the innovative reinstatement of the collapsed quay wall.
