Double Bridge Challenge in Maltby, South Yorkshire

30/10/2012 - posted in Bridges, HBPW News, Rail

Malby BridgeEngineer, Paul Monaghan, had a challenging weekend recently when a team of engineers and contractors were given just 30 hours to replace two railway under bridges in South Yorkshire.

Two mobile ‘heavy’ cranes were used to carry out the work on the bridges – approximately seven miles apart – on Network Rail’s South Yorkshire Joint Line (SYJL) between Brancliffe and Kirk Sandall at Maltby

Paul, an Associate with HBPW, was on site during the installation of the new bridge structures to provide technical assistance to the construction team  – including colleagues from contractors, Carillion, – who worked furiously to replace the old structures which were removed to a special compound nearby and cut up before being take away.

The SYJL is a mineral line and both bridges, which have to support heavy goods rolling stock, were old, weakened and in need of replacement.

Both schemes were run concurrently across a 30 hour ‘possession’ window, when Network Rail closed the line, and the replacement bridges – designed by HBPW – mean faster, heavier trains will now be able to use the line’s new structures. The Brancliffe to Kirk Sandall line runs between collieries.

Client: Network Rail
Contractor: Carillion
