Plans to add an additional stop to South Yorkshire’s Supertram Train network – the first since it opened in 2018 – will create wider access to one of the country’s leading heavy engineering ‘museums’, Rotherham’s Magna Science and Adventure Centre.
HBPW and AmcoGiffen, along with Network Rail and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, are jointly leading the development.
Currently up to three services an hour travel on the existing tram network from Sheffield Cathedral to Meadowhall South / Tinsley, before proceeding over a new section of track linking the tram line to the rail line.
It then continues on to the National Rail network to Rotherham Parkgate via Rotherham Central station.
However, plans are now well in hand to create an additional stop at the huge educational facility, which borders the M1 motorway.
Current proposals will see the creation of two Tram Train platforms at Magna Science and Adventure Centre – one for each running line, connected by a footbridge – with passenger information, lighting, CCTV and passenger shelters. A park and ride scheme is also being developed in part of the existing car park.
HBPW has taken on the Role as Lead Designer supported by its supply chain partners AGHE, MRC, PBH Rail, Kilborn Consulting and JBA Consulting. The aim is to deliver a fully integrated design for the new Tram-train Station in addition to providing the Project Engineering and Assurance Roles for each of the disciplines.
The additional stop will also improve air quality and congestion, it is believed, particularly at junction 34 of the M1, with the overarching aim of encouraging people to think about choosing public transport and active travel over private cars.
The new station will also help residents access employment, walking and cycling opportunities.
