A Belting Inspection At Immingham
30/07/2019 - posted in Civils, HBPW News, Industrial, Inspections, Marine, Rail, UncategorisedPaul Jacklin needed to dust off his hiking boots to complete his latest assignment for Associated British Ports (ABP) in Immingham.
HBPW’s inspection and quality standards guru is renowned for his keen eye and was asked by ABP to carry out a principal inspection of the supporting structure to the company’s O2 conveyor.
“That might not sound much,” added Associate |Paul, “however, when you consider that it is 800m long and six metres above ground it only takes a walk up the left hand side and a stroll back down the right to clock up a tad short of a mile!
“Add to that a lot of looking up and down and I think it is fair to say that inspections can take their toll on the shoe leather with a good measure of neck ache thrown in!”
The O2 conveyor is used for transferring materials like iron ore from the Humber International Terminal jetty to the Immingham Bulk Storage facility, ahead of their transportation to places like Scunthorpe Steel Works.
“It is a comprehensive assignment,” added Paul, “requiring an inspection of all steel work that supports the conveyor deck and walkways and, because of mandatory regulations, I have to be within touching distance of all structural elements for the job to be deemed complete.
“Somewhere between lots of walking and use of a Mobile Elevating Work Platform – a cherry picker in layman’s language – I was able to complete the job satisfactorily and an inspection report with recommendations has now been forwarded to ABP,” added Paul. 501feffffff
