Moving cattle from one field to another may seem a fairly innocuous activity, however, when a railway line comes into play……..so do engineers!

Only in this instance we were called in by Network Rail to design the infill strategy for an under-track bridge on the South West Main Line at Newport in Wales.

HBPW Associate, Paul Monaghan, takes up the story: “When it was first constructed the under–track bridge was intended to provide access for a local farmer so that he could move his cattle round  farmland

“However, it is no longer needed, so Network Rail has purchased the land and asked us to design the infill strategy for the bridge. We will only have a weekend in which to carry out the work, which is being done as part of Network Rail’s ‘Package Six’ Project.”

The entire scheme has also required HBPW to design two new bridges as well as project managing the gritblast, repair and paint of a third.
