Case study: Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club

Background:-
A magnificent £65m sports stadium visited by thousands of football fans.

Challenge
Nearby Falmer Station was built around 1865 and was not designed to cater for the 500 people a minute using it on match day.

Solution
HBPW designed and detailed an 18.4m span steel footbridge over the railway to facilitate pedestrian and disabled access from one station platform to another. The bridge is 8m wide, with an 8m wide steel staircase and steelwork approach ramps on both sides.

The company detailed the innovative steelwork to eliminate bearings and reduce both construction and future maintenance costs.

HBPW’s engineers worked closely with the steelwork fabricators to allow single bridge components to be made off site in large units, which were then simply bolted together at the station to reduce assembly time on site. We also designed piled foundations and retaining structures as part of the works, with retaining walls being used to support the bridge superstructure. This integrated solution further reduced construction time and costs.

Outcome
HBPW has been a key player in upgrading Falmer train station in the shadow of Brighton and Hove Albion’s new American Express Community Stadium.
