HBPW played its part in aiding the cause of breast cancer recently after donating cash to a slightly unorthodox event – a frog race evening!
The Retford Inner Wheel Club near Nottingham staged the event at St Joseph’s Church Rooms on Babworth Road, as part of its fund raising efforts for the national charity, Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
Around 50 people attended the event which raised £1100 from donations and as a result of staging seven ‘races’!
Club President, Mrs Joan Broughton, said: “We were delighted that HBPW agreed to support one of our races – The Elizabeth Stakes – and we are able to reassure all concerned that no animals were harmed on the evening!”
The races, said to require more skill than anything involving a horse, featured a one foot high wooden frog, string and, allegedly, involved both a smattering of chance and infinite skill!
Organisers have confirmed that HBPW’s Managing Partner, Paul Withers, did not win any of the races which had runners with names as dubious as Jumping Jack, Flippity Flop and Flog the Frog! The RSPCA has been informed!
