Case study: Scarborough Rail Depot, North Yorkshire
Background:-
As Scarborough prepared to welcome 13 new five carriage Nova trains, providing 700,000 extra seats a year for those travelling to and from the town, HBPW was called on to play its part in delivering a £7m servicing depot to look after the new east coast rail stock.
The facility, which provides both maintenance services and fuelling for trains, represents an investment of time and commitment by three key partners, TransPennine Express (TPE), construction company GRAHAM and Network Rail.
Challenge
HBPW worked alongside GRAHAM to design foundations for the structure which included a canopy beneath which trains can be serviced away from the elements. There are also high-level access walkways for the purposes of rail stock cleaning. However, engineers had to be mindful of possible excess noise that might effect local residents.
Solution
They created a screening ‘wall’ as part of the wider design, ensuring that local properties were protected from any threat of noise disturbance. Engineers also designed drainage and hard-standing requirements at the Network Rail facility.
Outcome
The new five carriage trains run between Scarborough, York, Leeds, Huddersfield, Manchester and Liverpool. Not only has the facility created new jobs, but it has also played its part in ensuring that trains in the North Yorkshire area keep moving. The scheme also provided vested partners with the perfect opportunity to make a real difference to the environment and local communities, enabling them to deliver what has become known as a project with ‘lasting impact’,
